The Indian Navy is undertaking a major modernization of its MiG-29K fleet by replacing the Russian-origin Zhuk-ME radar with the indigenous Uttam Mk2 AESA radar developed by DRDO’s LRDE. The decision follows a significant performance degradation of nearly 40 percent in the existing radar due to harsh maritime conditions. The Uttam Mk2 introduces advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array technology, enabling multi-target tracking, improved detection range, and superior resistance to electronic warfare. The upgrade also includes maritime hardening measures to ensure durability in salt-laden environments. Additionally, it opens the path for integration of indigenous Astra BVR missiles, reducing reliance on foreign systems. With delays in the TEDBF program, the MiG-29K will remain India’s primary carrier fighter for the next 15–20 years, making this upgrade strategically vital.
