Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has announced that the supply situation for GE F404-IN20 engines powering the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft is expected to improve significantly in the coming months. HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kota confirmed during the company’s Q4 FY26 conference call that six engines have already been delivered by GE Aerospace, with an additional 15 to 20 engines expected before the end of the year. The update marks an important development for the Tejas Mk1A program, which has faced delays due to disruptions in engine deliveries from the United States. Global supply chain issues had affected GE Aerospace’s production schedules, placing pressure on HAL’s manufacturing timeline for the fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force’s ₹46,898 crore contract for 83 Tejas Mk1A jets was impacted by these delays, leading to uncertainty regarding aircraft deliveries. According to HAL, the arrival of more engines will help stabilize production activities and gradually increase aircraft assembly rates. Some engines already delivered are currently undergoing testing and integration, while others remain in validation stages as refinement work on the Tejas Mk1A platform continues. Industry analysts believe the improved engine supply pipeline could significantly boost production rates during FY27 and FY28. The Indian Air Force is closely monitoring the program because the Tejas Mk1A is expected to play a critical role in replacing retiring MiG-series aircraft and strengthening India’s fighter squadron strength.
