The United States has partnered with Shield AI to integrate the company’s Hivemind autonomy software into the Pentagon’s Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat System (LUCAS). The AI-enabled software will provide advanced navigation, swarm coordination, and autonomous combat functions for the loitering munition platform. LUCAS is designed as a low-cost attack drone inspired by the Iranian-made Shahed system and is intended for large-scale deployment to overwhelm enemy defenses. The Hivemind system allows multiple drones to operate cooperatively in contested or GPS-denied environments while requiring minimal human supervision. The collaboration reflects the Pentagon’s increasing focus on AI-powered autonomous warfare systems.
