CNN MCO, Thales, and CS GROUP have joined forces to upgrade the navigation systems onboard France’s three Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carriers. The modernization effort covers the vessels Mistral, Tonnerre, and Dixmude, along with additional support for the replenishment and reconnaissance ship Somme.

Installation of the new systems on Dixmude and Tonnerre will follow the French Navy’s scheduled maintenance periods, with complete fleet integration expected by 2027. The goal of the project is to guarantee that the Mistral-class vessels maintain full navigational capability even in sophisticated electronic warfare environments where GPS signals may be jammed or degraded.

Thales will supply its advanced TopAxyz inertial navigation system, which provides continuous position, speed, and heading data using onboard gyroscopes and accelerometers. Because it operates independently of satellite signals, the system ensures reliable navigation in contested maritime zones. CS GROUP will integrate the TopAxyz units into each ship’s broader navigation suite, overseeing sensor fusion, data distribution networks, embedded system architecture, and cybersecurity protections.

CNN MCO will oversee physical installation, testing, maintenance, and long-term system support throughout the ships’ operational deployments. The Mistral-class carriers each measure 199 meters in length, displace 21,500 tons, and achieve speeds of up to 19 knots. They carry a crew of 177, accommodate up to 900 troops, support 16 helicopters, and transport significant armored assets, including 60 vehicles or 13 tanks. Each vessel also includes a fully equipped 69-bed hospital, enabling major amphibious and humanitarian missions.
