The United Kingdom is reshaping its naval strategy by replacing the Type 45 destroyers with six Common Combat Vessels (CCVs) designed to operate alongside autonomous aerial, surface, and underwater systems. Rather than concentrating combat capability in a limited number of large warships, the CCV concept emphasizes distributed maritime operations through manned-unmanned teaming. The vessels will serve as command hubs for multi-domain drones while enhancing air defense, maritime surveillance, and operational flexibility. Integrated with the Royal Navy’s future Type 26 and Type 31 frigates as well as autonomous platforms such as the Type 91, Type 92, Type 93, and Type 94 systems, the CCVs will support Britain’s evolving maritime strategy across the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.
