The Portuguese Air Force has strengthened its transport capability by signing an agreement with Embraer Defense & Security to purchase a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft. The updated deal also secures 10 additional purchase options, potentially opening the door for NATO partners to acquire the platform in the future. This step builds upon Lisbon’s original 2019 contract with the Brazilian manufacturer, which aimed to replace the country’s aging C-130 Hercules fleet.

Portugal already operates two KC-390s delivered in 2022 and 2024. Three more aircraft from the initial five-unit contract are due by 2027, meaning the fleet will soon see significant expansion. The KC-390, with a length of 35 meters (115 feet), is known for its multi-role design, capable of transporting troops and cargo, executing airdrops, supporting medical evacuation missions, firefighting, and conducting humanitarian relief operations.

In terms of capability, the aircraft can lift up to 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds) of cargo or accommodate 80 troops, supported by a fuel capacity of 35,000 kilograms (77,162 pounds). Powered by two IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, the Millennium reaches speeds above 500 knots (926 kilometers/575 miles per hour), operates at altitudes of up to 11,000 meters (36,089 feet), and offers a maximum range of 4,570 nautical miles (8,464 kilometers/5,259 miles).

Beyond its transport role, the KC-390 can be fitted with electronic warfare systems, self-protection measures, and countermeasures against missile threats. Since entering operational service in Brazil in 2019, followed by Portugal in 2023 and Hungary in 2024, the aircraft has demonstrated versatility and reliability. To date, 11 air forces around the world, including seven NATO members, have chosen the platform, highlighting its growing importance in global airlift operations.
