Sweden’s defense procurement agency has modified its existing contract with MBDA to acquire additional Common Anti-air Modular Missiles (CAMM) for its naval modernization program. The updated deal builds on the original 2023 agreement, which included CAMM surface-to-air missiles and the Sea Ceptor air defense system for the Royal Swedish Navy’s Visby-class corvettes.
The Sea Ceptor integration is scheduled to take place during the Visby fleet’s mid-life upgrade, beginning in late 2025. The modernization will be carried out by Saab in partnership with MBDA, with the first upgraded vessel expected to enter service by late 2026. The enhancements are intended to reinforce Sweden’s maritime air-defense capability amid rising regional security demands.
CAMM serves as the core effector for the Sea Ceptor system, employing vertical launch technology that generates a minimal launch signature to reduce detectability by hostile forces. With a range of 25 kilometers and an altitude envelope of 10 kilometers, the missile delivers 360-degree engagement capability, enabling simultaneous interception of multiple incoming threats.
Featuring an active radio-frequency seeker, CAMM supports all-weather operations without requiring expensive illumination or fire-control radars. Its relatively light weight—99 kilograms—makes it suitable for vessels ranging from compact 50-meter patrol craft to major frigates and destroyers, giving navies enhanced flexibility in force structure and deployment.
