Canada has taken a significant step toward renewing its underwater warfare capability by selecting Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) as the preferred partner for its future submarine acquisition program. The initiative seeks to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s aging Victoria-class submarines with a fleet of up to twelve advanced conventionally powered submarines designed for anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, intelligence collection, Arctic operations, and strategic deterrence. The selection follows an extensive international competition and will now move into an exclusive negotiation phase before a final agreement is reached. Beyond strengthening naval readiness, the program is expected to stimulate Canada’s defense industry through technology collaboration, industrial participation, and long-term sustainment activities. The procurement also reflects Ottawa’s strategic emphasis on expanding security cooperation with European NATO members while improving its ability to safeguard national maritime interests across three oceans and contribute more effectively to alliance operations.
