The Peruvian government has selected L3Harris Technologies’ Viper Shield electronic warfare system for its F-16 Block 70 fighter aircraft, adding a dedicated electronic protection capability to the planned fleet.Viper Shield is designed to help aircraft detect and respond to electromagnetic threats. The system provides pilots with warning and electronic countermeasure capabilities against hostile radar systems and other radio-frequency threats.Peru is acquiring 12 F-16 aircraft under a deal estimated at approximately $1.5 billion. The purchase is intended to strengthen the country’s aging fighter fleet and improve its air-defense capabilities. The country previously considered acquiring a larger fleet of 24 aircraft but ultimately reduced the planned purchase. Peru currently operates Mirage 2000 fighters, while several Russian-origin MiG-29 and Su-27 aircraft have reportedly experienced availability limitations. The Viper Shield, designated AN/ALQ-254(V)1, is an all-digital electronic warfare system developed specifically for the F-16. It combines radar-warning functions with electronic jamming technology to identify and counter electromagnetic threats. The system uses a software-defined architecture, allowing its capabilities to be modified through updates as new threats emerge. It can be integrated into the aircraft or installed as an external pod depending on configuration.Viper Shield can also work alongside the F-16’s APG-83 AESA radar, supporting the aircraft’s broader sensor and defensive architecture. For Peru, selecting the system provides an opportunity to introduce modern electronic protection alongside its new F-16 fleet. It could also improve compatibility with other operators using similar F-16 configurations and support future technology upgrades.
