UK defense company Babcock has established three new partnerships with Danish firms to investigate autonomous technologies, naval systems integration, and equipment for future maritime platforms. The agreements, announced during DALO Industry Days, involve Danish technology companies STORMBORN and CUBEDIN, along with maritime equipment specialist SH Group. The partnerships are intended to explore how Danish capabilities could contribute to naval fleets that combine conventional crewed vessels with uncrewed systems.Babcock and STORMBORN will study methods for incorporating autonomous technology into larger naval programs. Particular attention will be given to interoperability and the ability of crewed ships to coordinate with autonomous platforms operating elsewhere in the battlespace. The agreement with CUBEDIN focuses on standardized physical and digital interfaces. Such architecture could make it easier to install, remove, or upgrade sensors, mission equipment, and autonomous technologies without requiring major modifications to the host vessel.Meanwhile, Babcock and SH Group will examine opportunities for cooperation involving naval and ship-platform systems. The arrangement could increase participation from Danish suppliers in vessels produced for Denmark as well as ships intended for international customers. The partnerships support the broader “Hybrid Navy” concept, in which traditional warships operate alongside distributed autonomous systems. Under such an approach, crewed vessels could coordinate unmanned platforms while maintaining human oversight of key missions. The Royal Navy has identified hybrid operations as an important element of its future fleet strategy. Babcock’s cooperation with Danish companies could provide another pathway for developing and integrating these capabilities with allied naval forces. The relationship also builds on Babcock’s existing connection with Denmark. Its Arrowhead 140 frigate design is derived from Denmark’s Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates and forms the basis of the Royal Navy’s Type 31 program.
