Lockheed Martin’s delivery schedule for Bulgaria’s second batch of eight F-16 Block 70 fighter aircraft could be pushed back from late 2027 to the second quarter of 2030 because of production-related challenges. However, company representatives have indicated that the revised schedule remains provisional and that efforts are being made to reduce the potential delay. The possible postponement has prompted Bulgaria to examine temporary options for maintaining its fighter capability. Sofia has considered acquiring used aircraft, including secondhand F-16s and JAS-39 Gripens. Bulgarian officials have also contacted Poland and Hungary regarding possible MiG-29 aircraft and spare parts. The government has not yet selected a specific interim aircraft solution. Officials are also evaluating the availability of spare components, pilot training, technical assistance, and long-term maintenance support. Bulgaria originally ordered eight F-16s in 2019 and received its first aircraft in April 2025. The remaining aircraft from the initial batch were completed by December 2025, while the first group is undergoing integration before entering operational service. A second order for eight additional F-16 Block 70 fighters was placed in 2022. These aircraft are intended to replace Bulgaria’s aging Soviet-era MiG-29 fleet and form the core of the country’s future combat aviation capability.
