Hanwha Aerospace has presented a new operational concept that combines K9 self-propelled howitzers with vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicles. The concept was discussed during a K9 User Club gathering in Estonia and is intended to make artillery engagements faster and more accurate. Under the proposed architecture, VTOL UAVs would operate ahead of K9 artillery units, searching for and tracking potential targets. Once a threat is identified, the drones would generate precise target coordinates and transmit the information directly to the K9’s fire-direction system. This would create a closer connection between aerial surveillance and ground-based artillery, allowing the howitzers to respond to targets with less delay. The approach is aimed at improving the speed of the artillery kill chain while giving K9 crews access to updated battlefield information without relying solely on conventional observation methods.
