Poland has received 28 K2 Black Panther main battle tanks under a major follow-on agreement with South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem. The wider contract, signed in 2025, is valued at approximately 9 trillion won, or $6.5 billion.The latest delivery increases Poland’s operational K2 inventory to 208 vehicles. This includes the 180 tanks acquired through the country’s original procurement agreement signed in 2022.Many of the newly delivered tanks are expected to reinforce the 16th Mechanized Division, which is responsible for Poland’s northeastern areas and contributes to NATO’s eastern-flank defense near Russia and Belarus.Additional Tanks and Local ProductionThe latest agreement covers another 180 K2 tanks. Of these, 116 K2GF vehicles are scheduled for delivery through 2027, while 64 customized K2PL tanks are planned for delivery between 2028 and 2030.The contract also includes 81 specialized vehicles based on the K2 chassis. These include 24 bridge-layer vehicles, 31 recovery platforms, and 25 engineering variants designed to support armored units during operations.Poland is also establishing domestic industrial capacity to support the program. State-owned Bumar-Łabędy will participate in final assembly of 61 K2PL tanks and help integrate Polish components and additional protection systems.The localized K2PL configuration is expected to include improved side protection, counter-drone equipment, and an active protection system.The procurement forms part of Warsaw’s broader effort to replace older Soviet-era armored equipment transferred to Ukraine. Once its modernization plans are completed, Poland aims to operate nearly 900 modern tanks across its K2, M1A2 Abrams, and Leopard 2 fleets, potentially making it one of Europe’s strongest armored powers.
