Greece is undertaking a major modernisation programme for its approximately 30-year-old Mercedes G-Class military vehicles to improve their suitability for contemporary battlefield requirements. The upgrade programme is being carried out by Hellenic Vehicle Industries, or ELVO, which will introduce several mechanical and ergonomic improvements to the ageing vehicles. The work includes fitting new engines and automatic transmissions designed to enhance vehicle performance while making them easier for personnel to operate. The modernisation will also address crew comfort and environmental conditions. The vehicles are scheduled to receive electric air-conditioning systems, replacing or improving their existing arrangements to provide better climate control during operations. ELVO will additionally redesign the vehicle interiors. The changes include improved ergonomic crew seating and armrests, with the aim of making prolonged operation more practical for military personnel. The programme effectively seeks to extend the useful operational life of the G-Class fleet by combining its existing platform with updated propulsion, transmission, climate-control and crew-interface technologies.
