The Netherlands has entered into a long-term framework agreement with Saab to provide Barracuda Mobile Camouflage Systems for vehicles operated by the Dutch Armed Forces.An initial order has already been placed, with deliveries expected to take place over the coming years. The agreement initially covers the Royal Netherlands Army’s Fennek reconnaissance vehicles and Panzerhaubitze 2000NL self-propelled howitzers, while additional vehicle types could be added later.The Dutch Ministry of Defence previously indicated that the arrangement could involve hundreds of mobile camouflage systems under a 10-year framework.Barracuda Mobile Camouflage SystemSaab’s Barracuda MCS is designed to reduce the signatures produced by military vehicles. The system can reduce visual, infrared, and electromagnetic detectability, making vehicles more difficult for hostile surveillance and targeting systems to identify.The camouflage material can be customized for different operating environments, including woodland, urban, and Arctic conditions. This allows military platforms to blend more effectively with their surroundings.Beyond concealment, the system also provides thermal-management benefits. Its heat-reduction properties can lower the temperature of the vehicle and help reduce thermal stress on personnel and onboard electronics, potentially improving operational endurance.
