Indra Selects Thales LMM for Spain’s New Naval Defence System — Indra has signed an agreement with Thales Spain to integrate the Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) into SILAEM, a shipborne launcher system under development for the Spanish Navy. The program aims to deliver Spain’s first domestically designed naval point-defence system dedicated to countering very-short-range aerial threats, including drones, helicopters, and anti-ship missiles. SILAEM will combine the laser-guided LMM with Indra’s X-band fire-control radars, associated sensors, and command-and-control technology. Valued at 51 million euros ($58 million), the program will produce two configurations: a stand-alone system and another integrated with SCOMBA, Spain’s indigenous naval combat management system. Its open architecture is intended to improve interoperability with equipment from different manufacturers and could allow NATO and allied navies to incorporate the capability into their vessels. The LMM is a lightweight precision weapon designed for air, land, and maritime operations. Weighing approximately 13 kilograms, it has a reported range exceeding six kilometres and a speed greater than Mach 1.5. Laser guidance supports accurate engagements while helping minimize collateral damage. The missile can be launched from shoulder-fired and tripod-mounted systems, vehicles, and integrated platforms such as Thales’ RapidRanger. Its intended targets include drones, helicopters, light armoured vehicles, and small boats, offering naval forces an additional option for countering aerial and surface threats.
