US manufacturer AM General is undertaking a major modernization of the Humvee, combining new mechanical equipment with digital technologies to update the four-decade-old military vehicle. The modernization is structured around three principal phases, with the first focused on improving the vehicle’s powertrain and mobility.The initial phase introduces a more powerful 250-horsepower engine, an upgraded transmission and long-travel suspension. The new engine generates more than 745 newton-meters (550 pound-feet) of torque, providing greater performance than the original configuration.The powerplant is also designed to operate on multiple military and conventional fuels, including JP-8 jet fuel, F-24 and standard diesel.
