The US State Department has given the green light for a possible $780-million foreign military sale of Javelin anti-tank missile systems to Poland. The deal, once finalized, will supply Warsaw with 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 253 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (CLU).

The package also covers missile simulation rounds, battery coolant units, tool kits, spare parts, and training support. Officials emphasized that the acquisition would enhance Poland’s territorial defense capabilities while reinforcing its ability to meet NATO obligations.

The Javelin is a man-portable, fire-and-forget missile system designed to defeat heavily armored platforms, including modern main battle tanks. Its infrared guidance allows operators to fire and immediately take cover, unlike older wire-guided systems that require continuous operator control. With a strike range of 65 meters to 4 kilometers, the weapon is highly versatile in most battlefield environments.

A notable feature of the proposed package is the Javelin Lightweight CLU. Compared to the Block I version, it is 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter, with twice the target detection and recognition capability. Its reduced weight improves transportability, while redesigned grips enhance soldier comfort during prolonged missions. Together, these upgrades make the Javelin a critical tool for Poland’s evolving defense needs.
