The Royal Thai Air Force has finalized a 3.44-billion-baht ($107 million) agreement to procure the Barak MX air defense system from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The acquisition forms a key component of Thailand’s ongoing Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) modernization program, aimed at boosting the protection of critical military installations.

Thailand selected the Barak MX to counter an expanding range of regional threats, including drones, cruise missiles, and long-range strike systems. The system provides multi-layer defense with interceptors capable of engaging targets at 35 km, 70 km, and 150 km ranges, effectively adding a medium-to-high interception tier to the country’s air defense network. This upgrade is expected to ease the reliance on Thailand’s short-range air defense units and strengthen overall response capability.

The Barak MX has demonstrated real-world performance, notably during Israel’s “Rising Lion” operation, where it successfully intercepted Iranian missile salvos. Its combat-proven reliability was a key factor in Thailand’s selection process, particularly as the regional security environment continues to evolve.

The purchase carries additional strategic weight, as neighboring Cambodia and Myanmar are believed to operate long-range offensive assets such as China’s PHL-03 MLRS with a range of 130 km and North Korea’s Hwasong ballistic missiles, capable of reaching 300–700 km. The Barak MX system is expected to help Thailand mitigate these emerging threats and reinforce national airspace protection.
