India has signed a contract with Kongsberg Maritime to procure 18 Kamewa waterjets for its Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), marking the company’s largest order of this kind. These propulsion systems operate by drawing in and expelling water at high velocity, eliminating exposed propellers and improving efficiency. The technology enhances vessel speed, maneuverability, and operational stealth by reducing noise and vibration. The NGMV fleet, currently under construction by Cochin Shipyard Limited, is designed for a range of naval missions, including maritime strike operations, anti-surface warfare, and coastal defense. Equipped with advanced weapon systems and powered by LM2500 gas turbine engines, the vessels are expected to achieve speeds of up to 33 knots. Deliveries are anticipated to begin by 2027, strengthening India’s naval capabilities in both offensive and defensive operations.
