The US Navy has certified Rolls-Royce’s mtu Series 4000 and Series 2000 marine engines for use aboard tactical unmanned surface vessels (USVs). The certification represents a significant step toward employing these propulsion systems on autonomous maritime platforms designed for extended operations without direct human involvement. Under the approval, the engines are cleared to support platforms capable of remaining deployed for as long as 30 days without onboard personnel carrying out human intervention, maintenance, or repairs. The certification was issued in accordance with requirements established under Washington’s National Defense Authorization Act. As part of the approval process, the mtu Series 4000 and 2000 engines met the benchmarks established for their use in autonomous systems. The certification provides the US Navy with additional propulsion options for tactical unmanned vessels that are expected to operate for prolonged periods while reducing or eliminating the need for onboard crews and routine maintenance during missions.
