Fincantieri, in coordination with OCCAR, has initiated a comprehensive upgrade program for the Thaon di Revel-class PPA fleet of the Italian Navy, transitioning all vessels to a standardized “full combat” configuration. This modernization will convert both “light” and “light plus” variants into fully capable multi-role frigates equipped with vertical launch systems, advanced missile integration, enhanced electronic warfare suites, and robust cyber defense architectures. The platform itself already features a sophisticated Combined Diesel and Gas (CODAG) propulsion system, delivering speeds exceeding 50 km/h and an operational range of 5,000 nautical miles, enabling extended blue-water missions. Collaboration with Leonardo ensures integration of cutting-edge radar, sensor fusion, and combat management systems. Importantly, the upgrade applies to both active and under-construction vessels, ensuring fleet-wide capability parity. → Strategically, this initiative transforms modular patrol ships into high-end combatants, enhancing Italy’s naval deterrence, survivability, and multi-domain operational flexibility in contested maritime environments.
