The US Navy has awarded Boeing a $562 million contract to begin low-rate initial production of the MQ-25A Stingray unmanned aerial refueling aircraft. The award represents a major transition for the carrier-based drone, moving it from development activities toward the production phase and eventual operational deployment. The contract provides funding for three aircraft under Lot 1. It also covers the advance procurement of long-lead components required to manufacture another three Stingrays under Lot 2. The MQ-25A is being developed to operate from aircraft carriers as an uncrewed tanker. Its primary role is to extend the operational reach of carrier-based aircraft by providing aerial refueling support. The latest production award therefore establishes the initial aircraft quantities while allowing Boeing to secure components needed for the following production lot.
