Japan is considering exporting its retired Type 88 anti-ship missiles to the Philippines as part of growing defense cooperation between the two countries. The missile system, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has been used by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force since the late 1980s for coastal defense operations. With a range exceeding 100 kilometers and a 225-kilogram warhead, the Type 88 offers capabilities similar to the US Harpoon missile. Japan’s decision comes after easing restrictions on military exports to friendly nations. Alongside the missile discussions, Tokyo is also accelerating the transfer of defense platforms such as Abukuma-class destroyers and TC-90 maritime patrol aircraft to Manila. The move reflects increasing regional security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and Japan’s broader strategy to strengthen partnerships amid evolving maritime security challenges.
