Lockheed Martin Tests New Container-Based Precision Strike SystemLockheed Martin has reached a new milestone in its development of the Kodiak containerized launcher, conducting its first live-fire demonstration with a GMLRS-family training munition. The test was aimed at demonstrating how a compact launcher could provide precision-fire capabilities from platforms that are not normally equipped with conventional rocket launchers.During the demonstration, engineers loaded and fired a Reduced-Range Practice Rocket. The training projectile is used by crews operating HIMARS and M270A2 MLRS platforms to rehearse firing procedures for GMLRS and other MLRS Family of Munitions rounds.The Kodiak concept is centered on portability and platform flexibility. Instead of depending on a dedicated launcher vehicle, the system places the firing equipment inside a container. This approach could allow military forces to deploy precision fires from a wider range of platforms across different operating environments.Lockheed Martin also highlights the system’s compact footprint. Compared with conventional mobile launchers such as HIMARS and the M270A2, the containerized configuration is intended to present a lower-observable profile. The company says this could offer users another option when launcher visibility and platform size are important operational considerations.Each Kodiak container is designed to carry up to 12 GMLRS rockets. The capacity gives operators the ability to concentrate a significant number of precision munitions within a relatively small installation. It also provides a scalable approach that could be adapted according to the requirements of different missions.The live-fire event is part of a broader Lockheed Martin effort to develop containerized weapons. The company has also tested the Grizzly containerized launcher, which is designed around Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles and intended to provide a capability against attack drones.The two projects demonstrate how a common container-based approach can be applied to different mission requirements. Kodiak focuses on precision strike, while Grizzly addresses defensive requirements against aerial threats.The successful firing represents an important development milestone for Kodiak. Further testing and platform integration will be required before the system can be assessed for wider operational use.
