Edgewing, the industrial joint venture leading the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), has secured a £4.6-billion contract to continue development of the next-generation sixth-generation fighter aircraft jointly pursued by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. Formed by BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement, Edgewing serves as both the programme’s prime contractor and design authority. The latest contract funds the completion of advanced concept studies, system assessments, and detailed engineering activities as the aircraft moves toward full-scale development. Scheduled to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon and Mitsubishi F-2 around 2035, the future fighter will integrate advanced stealth technology, artificial intelligence, digital engineering, network-centric warfare capabilities, and manned-unmanned teaming concepts. Although additional nations have expressed interest in joining the programme, the partner countries continue prioritizing schedule stability during the early development phase while positioning GCAP as one of the world’s most ambitious sixth-generation combat aircraft initiatives.
