The Australian government has awarded Babcock Australia a five-year, A$129-million contract to provide sustainment support for the Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac-class frigates. The agreement covers asset management, engineering assistance, and supply-chain services aimed at keeping the vessels operational and seaworthy throughout the remaining part of their service lives. Saab Australia will support Babcock by contributing technical knowledge of the Anzac-class platform and its combat system, along with an established Australian workforce. The Navy currently operates eight Anzac-class frigates, which entered service between 1996 and 2006. These ships are gradually being replaced by a new class of general-purpose frigates based on Japan’s upgraded Mogami design. The first replacement vessel is expected to reach Australia in December 2029. The contract is also expected to create or sustain more than 70 defence-industry positions in Western Australia and New South Wales. Babcock plans to involve small and medium-sized Australian companies in supplying spare parts and supporting asset-management activities, helping broaden local industrial participation.
