The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded TKMS ATLAS UK a contract to develop and supply a Next Generation Countermeasure system for Royal Navy submarines, including both current and future platforms. The NGCM programme forms part of the wider Underwater Defensive Aids Suite and will be developed with Babcock, which will contribute countermeasure launcher technology and integration expertise for submarines already in service. The system is being designed to counter evolving and emerging underwater threats. Its development will follow a spiral approach, allowing the capability to be progressively updated so that it remains operationally relevant over an extended period. The precise value of the contract has not been disclosed by the companies. However, a UK government notice issued in April 2024 indicated that the project could have a value of approximately £35 million ($47 million). The programme is scheduled to run from October 2025 until October 2032. TKMS ATLAS UK said the work is expected to sustain approximately 80 jobs in the United Kingdom.
