Oshkosh Defense has started building the first prototype of the Netherlands’ Kaaiman patrol vehicle. The vehicle adapts the company’s existing Joint Light Tactical Vehicle platform for Dutch forces operating in coastal regions and difficult terrain. It is part of a programme for 150 Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicles (DXPVs), selected by the Netherlands in 2025. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028. By using an established platform and production line, Oshkosh aims to reduce development time while incorporating features required by Dutch forces.
**Designed for Littoral Missions:** The DXPV is a Dutch-specific version of the Oshkosh JLTV, a light tactical vehicle designed to provide protected mobility. It is not a purpose-built amphibious vehicle; rather, it is a wheeled land platform adapted for expeditionary operations. The Dutch configuration includes corrosion protection for maritime conditions and saltwater exposure, improved suspension, better off-road mobility, modular protection options and integrated mission systems. The vehicle is also intended to accommodate future weapons and sensors as operational requirements change.
**Procurement and Delivery:** The Netherlands selected the vehicle through its Future Littoral All Terrain Mobility-Patrol Vehicle programme. The initiative seeks a patrol platform capable of operating in demanding coastal and amphibious environments. In January, the Netherlands ordered DXPVs in a deal valued at between $25 million and $30 million. That purchase followed an April 2025 order for 150 vehicles under the same programme. The prototype will help adapt the existing JLTV design to Dutch requirements ahead of planned deliveries beginning in 2028.
