Indian Army’s Zorawar Tank Upgrade Could Delay Induction Until 2028–29 — India’s Zorawar light tank programme faces potential delays as the Army seeks stronger protection against modern battlefield threats. The vehicle was designed for high-altitude operations along the Himalayan frontier, where mobility and transportability are essential. However, the proposed increase in armour protection could raise its weight from approximately 25 tonnes to 30–32 tonnes, potentially affecting performance with its existing 760-horsepower engine. Engineers are examining modular armour and other survivability improvements, but a more powerful engine could require additional testing and certification. The tank features a 105mm gun and is designed for strategic air transport. India plans to acquire 354 vehicles, with DRDO and Larsen & Toubro developing the initial 59. The enhanced requirements could push induction towards 2028–29.
