Irving Shipbuilding, based in Nova Scotia, has secured a contract to begin building the first three of 15 River-class destroyers for the Royal Canadian Navy. The $5.5 billion (CAD 8 billion) deal covers six years of construction and includes the vessels Fraser, Saint-Laurent, and Mackenzie. It also provides for spare parts, crew training, and ongoing maintenance services to support the new warships.
