India is exploring the possibility of converting its S4-class nuclear submarines into guided-missile platforms (SSGN) to enhance conventional strike capabilities. By replacing ballistic missiles with cruise missiles like BrahMos and Nirbhay, the submarine can carry a larger number of precision weapons. This transformation allows it to function as a stealthy “arsenal submarine,” capable of launching multiple strikes while remaining undetected. Leveraging an existing platform reduces development costs and timelines significantly. This move strengthens India’s naval power and improves its ability to project force in the Indo-Pacific region.
