The Indian Navy is expanding its specialized anti-submarine warfare fleet with the induction of INS Malvan, the second vessel of the Mahe-class shallow-water combat program. Purpose-built for coastal and littoral operations, the platform incorporates advanced indigenous underwater detection systems, modern combat management technologies, and specialized anti-submarine weapons optimized for complex shallow-water environments. Designed to counter increasingly sophisticated underwater threats, the vessel enhances surveillance coverage, rapid response capability, and maritime domain awareness along India’s extensive coastline. Constructed with a high percentage of indigenous components, INS Malvan reflects continued progress under India’s domestic defense manufacturing initiatives while strengthening long-term naval self-reliance. Together with other ships in the class, the vessel contributes to a layered coastal defense architecture capable of protecting strategic ports, shipping routes, offshore infrastructure, and critical maritime assets throughout the Indian Ocean region.
