Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has contracted Tokyo-based OKI to supply towed passive sonar systems and related equipment for the Royal Australian Navy’s improved Mogami-class general-purpose frigates. The agreement covers equipment for the first three of 11 frigates ordered by Australia under a multi-billion-dollar defense partnership with Japan. OKI brings more than 90 years of experience in underwater acoustic technology and has supported Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force sonar systems. The contract represents the company’s first overseas transfer of defense equipment. Australia selected MHI’s improved Mogami-class frigates, designated 06FFM, under its General Purpose Frigate program to replace the Anzac-class fleet. The ships will perform escort, air defense, and surface warfare missions. The first three vessels will be constructed overseas, with remaining ships built in Western Australia. The lead frigate is expected for delivery by 2029 and commissioning in 2030.
