Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has officially launched the Japan Coast Guard’s newest large patrol vessel, JS Yashima (PLH-46), at its Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The vessel forms part of Japan’s ongoing investment in strengthening maritime law enforcement, search-and-rescue operations, and territorial security. Construction began under Japan’s fiscal year 2023 supplementary budget with funding valued at approximately 19.6 billion yen, demonstrating the government’s commitment to modernizing coast guard capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.The new patrol vessel represents the second generation of the Mizuho-class design and will replace the original JS Yashima commissioned in 1988. Decades of operational service led to severe structural wear on the older ship, prompting its planned retirement earlier than originally expected. The replacement vessel also preserves historical continuity by retaining the symbolic name “Yashima,” derived from an ancient poetic reference to Japan.The 134-meter patrol vessel is capable of speeds exceeding 25 knots and incorporates a large helicopter flight deck and enclosed hangar capable of supporting two medium-sized helicopters, including aircraft comparable to the Bell 412 or Sikorsky S-76D. These aviation capabilities significantly enhance surveillance, disaster response, maritime rescue, and law enforcement missions across Japan’s extensive maritime territory.To improve operational effectiveness, the ship carries 40mm and 20mm weapon systems alongside remotely operated water cannons for non-lethal enforcement. Once final installation of propulsion systems, electronics, communications equipment, and mission systems is completed, the vessel is expected to enter operational service following delivery in 2027.
