Thailand has opted to acquire four Gripen fighter jets from Saab, the Swedish defense manufacturer, in a $500 million defense purchase aimed at replacing the country’s aging F-16 A/B fleet from the 1980s.
This acquisition marks the beginning of a 10-year procurement initiative that envisions purchasing a total of 12 new combat jets. According to Air Force Commander Punpakdee Pattanakul, the upgrade is essential for enhancing air defense capabilities and protecting national sovereignty.
The decision to proceed with the Gripen was finalized after extensive evaluations and will be submitted to the Thai cabinet in mid-July, with a formal contract expected by August.
