Northrop Grumman has been awarded a $140.8-million contract by the US Department of Defense to support the production of five E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft for Japan. The contract is part of a larger foreign military sale agreement between Washington and Tokyo that was finalized in 2024.
The scope of work includes non-recurring engineering activities essential for the aircraft’s assembly and customization. These tasks will be primarily conducted in Melbourne, Florida, with additional contributions from various sites across the continental United States. Coordination of the project will be managed by the Naval Air Systems Command in Maryland, which is responsible for overseeing Navy aviation systems and their related equipment.
Japan’s overall procurement package for the E-2D aircraft is valued at approximately $1.38 billion. It includes engines, radar systems, avionics, GPS navigation, and electronic warfare capabilities. While some of these components will be integrated into the aircraft before shipment, others will be delivered as spare parts. Northrop Grumman is scheduled to complete the program by March 2029.
