The US Navy has christened the USNS Solomon Atkinson (T-ATS 12), the seventh Navajo-class towing, salvage, and rescue vessel designed to support modern maritime recovery and support operations. Named after Chief Warrant Officer 4 Solomon Atkinson, a pioneering member of SEAL Team One and decorated combat veteran, the vessel honors his contributions across Korea, Vietnam, and astronaut training programs during the early spaceflight era. The Navajo-class replaces aging Powhatan-class tugs and Safeguard-class rescue ships with modern multi-mission platforms capable of towing warships, supporting diving and firefighting operations, recovering damaged assets, and assisting autonomous systems. Powered by twin diesel engines, the ship offers long-range deployment capability and operational flexibility for expeditionary naval missions.
