South Korea has introduced an on-device artificial intelligence assistant aboard a Pohang-class warship to help naval personnel access technical information and equipment-operating procedures. Developed by physical AI company MakinaRocks, the system functions as a digital reference assistant, allowing crew members to consult relevant manuals, maintenance instructions and technical guidelines without manually searching through extensive documentation. The initiative is intended to address the challenges associated with operating and maintaining increasingly complex naval platforms. Warships contain hundreds of equipment systems, making access to accurate technical information important for effective operations. Declining military manpower has added further pressure on personnel, increasing the need for tools that can improve access to knowledge and support daily tasks. By placing the AI capability directly on the device, the system is intended to provide a more accessible way for crew members to retrieve information when required.
