India has officially begun constructing its first patrol vessel equipped with artificial intelligence, aimed at safeguarding maritime borders and executing diverse missions across the nation’s exclusive economic zone.

The new ship, called the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), will span 117 meters (384 feet) and have a displacement of approximately 2,700 tons. It will be capable of accommodating up to 121 crew members.

Engineered for speed and endurance, the NGOPV will reach a top speed of 23 knots (around 43 kilometers per hour) and cover distances up to 5,000 nautical miles. This makes it ideal for both rapid deployment and prolonged missions in strategically sensitive waters.

The addition of AI capabilities marks a significant step forward in modernizing India’s naval patrol fleet for smarter surveillance and quicker threat response.
