RTX’s Raytheon has achieved another important milestone in the development of the Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI), a modern portable air defense missile designed to replace the long-serving Stinger system. During recent evaluations, the interceptor successfully identified, tracked, and neutralized multiple representative aerial targets, validating the performance of its advanced guidance package, precision seeker, digital processing architecture, and propulsion system. The missile integrates a redesigned soldier-portable launch assembly with a high-performance electro-optical seeker and an advanced solid rocket motor, providing greater engagement capability against drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and other low-altitude airborne threats. The system is being engineered to deliver higher accuracy, improved resistance to electronic countermeasures, faster target acquisition, and enhanced operational flexibility for dismounted forces. The successful testing represents a significant step toward fielding a new generation of highly mobile short-range air defense systems capable of protecting ground forces in increasingly complex combat environments.
