Lockheed Martin has successfully completed the burst test of the second-stage motor case for the Next Generation Interceptor, representing another milestone in the US homeland missile defense program. Engineers subjected the carbon fiber motor case to pressures exceeding expected launch conditions using a reinforced water-filled vessel. The structure withstood the required loads before failing at the intended threshold, confirming its ability to endure launch stresses while generating the thrust required for interceptor missions. The successful test supports the program’s upcoming critical design review and keeps development on track for deployment by 2030. The Next Generation Interceptor will replace the existing Ground-Based Interceptors currently protecting the United States from long-range ballistic missile threats. Featuring modular architecture, multiple kill vehicles, advanced target discrimination technologies, and digital engineering methods, the interceptor is designed to improve reliability and accelerate development. Lockheed Martin also recently opened Missile Assembly Building 5 in Alabama to support future production.
