MBDA’s TESEO MK2/E anti-ship missile has completed a validation firing for the Italian Navy, bringing the weapon programme closer to the end of development and formal qualification. During the approximately 20-minute piloted cruise flight, the test examined the missile’s range and confirmed key aspects of its design. The trial represents an important milestone before qualification and production. Deliveries of the missile are scheduled to begin in 2028. Development of the MK2/E began in 2021 as a completely new weapon system designed to significantly expand the capabilities of the TESEO family. It will operate alongside the Mk2/A, which is already deployed aboard Italy’s FREMM and Horizon-class frigates. A production contract signed in 2025 provides for MK2/E integration aboard Italy’s next generation of surface combatants. These include FREMM EVO frigates, PPA multipurpose offshore patrol vessels and the future DDX-class destroyers. TESEO MK2/E CapabilitiesThe MK2/E is designed for long-range maritime and land-attack missions. It builds upon the Mk2/A design while introducing newer guidance, sensing and mission-management technologies. Its dual-mode seeker combines an AESA radio-frequency sensor with electronic counter-countermeasures and an electro-optical sensor. This arrangement is intended to support precision engagement of both maritime and land targets. An automated mission-planning system generates firing solutions and allows operators to modify mission parameters according to changing tactical conditions. A two-way datalink permits control and updates during flight, including target changes, reassignment and mission termination. The missile uses high-subsonic cruise flight and high-G manoeuvrability during the terminal phase. Its range exceeds 350 kilometres (217 miles), almost twice the 180-kilometre (112-mile) range attributed to the Mk2/A. Navigation combines inertial navigation and GPS with a radar altimeter, allowing the weapon to conduct both sea-skimming and overland flight profiles.
