Lockheed Martin Unveils PAC-3 Edge Interceptor for Hypersonic Threats — Lockheed Martin has introduced PAC-3 Edge, a next-generation Patriot interceptor designed to counter hypersonic weapons and advanced missile threats using technology derived from its combat-proven PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) system. The interceptor is being developed for the US Army’s Future Interceptor program and is intended to engage targets at greater ranges and altitudes. Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business, reportedly confirmed that the company is competing against an unnamed rival for the program. Testing is targeted for 2027, with potential deployment planned for 2031. PAC-3 Edge is expected to expand the Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense coverage against aircraft, missiles, and hypersonic threats while integrating with existing and future systems, including the Integrated Battle Command System, M903 launcher, containerized launchers, and HIMARS Flex. The interceptor will incorporate a newly developed in-house seeker and a three-pulse solid rocket motor designed by Northrop Grumman to provide controlled thrust throughout flight and improve long-range performance. Lockheed Martin has invested $250 million in its Strigo Product Center and plans to invest another $800 million in seeker technology to enhance accuracy and manoeuvrability. Production is planned at the company’s facility in Camden, Arkansas, where a new automated manufacturing plant is being constructed to help triple interceptor output over seven years. After production shifts to the new facility, the existing line will be upgraded to manufacture PAC-3 Edge.
