Kongsberg has received a 1.5 billion Norwegian krone, or approximately $155 million, contract to expand the Netherlands’ CITADEL air-defense programme. The order includes additional National Maneuver Air Defence Systems, or NOMADS, designed to provide highly mobile short-range protection for maneuvering forces. It also adds capacity to the Netherlands’ existing NASAMS capability. NOMADS combines command and control, radar, missiles, and other sensors on a mobile armored platform, allowing the system to accompany forces closer to the battlefield. It is intended to counter threats such as drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and aircraft. Kongsberg designed NOMADS to operate alongside NASAMS and other NATO air-defense systems through a networked architecture. Within CITADEL, NASAMS provides the medium-range layer, while NOMADS addresses shorter-range threats. The current NOMADS configuration can carry four AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles and includes a 3D radar, cameras, and a remote weapon station. CITADEL has continued to expand beyond the initial NASAMS and NOMADS acquisitions. In December 2025, Kongsberg signed an agreement with Rheinmetall to integrate its command-and-control technology into the Skyranger 30 mobile air-defense system.
