Kuwait has entered into a major defense agreement to acquire the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System), a modern air defense platform jointly developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon. This procurement is part of Kuwait’s broader effort to modernize its armed forces amid increasing regional security concerns. NASAMS is designed to operate as part of a layered air defense system, providing protection against a wide range of aerial threats including fighter aircraft, drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles. The system integrates advanced radar sensors, command-and-control centers, and mobile missile launchers to detect, track, and intercept incoming threats with high precision. It uses missiles such as the AMRAAM and AIM-9X, allowing engagement at medium ranges of up to 60 kilometers. With detection capabilities extending beyond 100 kilometers, NASAMS offers early warning and rapid response capabilities. Its adoption by multiple NATO and allied countries highlights its reputation as a reliable and widely used air defense solution.
