Textron Aviation Defense has secured a contract exceeding $150 million to provide program management and maintenance support for the US military’s T-6 Texan II training aircraft. This agreement extends a 2021 contract and increases the overall program ceiling to $510 million, highlighting the importance of long-term sustainment in military aviation. The contract covers multiple variants, including the T-6A, T-6B, and T-6D, across the US Air Force, Navy, and Army. The T-6 Texan II, derived from the Pilatus PC-9, serves as a primary and intermediate training platform for military pilots. Its role is critical in preparing pilots for advanced aircraft operations, making its reliability and performance essential. Textron’s responsibilities include systems engineering, repairs, modifications, and overall fleet management. By ensuring consistent maintenance and upgrades, the company helps maintain high readiness levels and operational efficiency across the training fleet. The aircraft itself is equipped with a turboprop engine delivering 1,100 horsepower, enabling speeds of up to 280 knots and altitudes of 31,000 feet. With a range of 900 nautical miles, it provides sufficient endurance for comprehensive training missions. Globally, approximately 1,000 T-6 aircraft are in service across 15 countries, collectively accumulating over 5 million flight hours. This widespread adoption underscores the platform’s reliability and effectiveness.
