Gas Turbine Research Establishment has launched an initiative to develop an indigenous High Energy Ignition system for future fighter engines under programs like AMCA and Tejas Mk2. The HEI system uses capacitor-discharge technology to generate high-energy sparks required for reliable engine ignition under extreme conditions such as high-altitude relight and cold starts. The project includes development of exciter units, ignition cables, and plugs, with full engineering, certification, and production scope. This move addresses critical supply chain vulnerabilities identified in past operations and ensures full intellectual property ownership. It represents a major step toward self-reliance in aero-engine subsystems and supports future platforms including unmanned combat aircraft.
