India is accelerating research into directed energy weapons as DRDO advances development of high-energy laser and microwave-based defense systems. These technologies are intended to provide rapid-response protection against drones, missiles, and other aerial threats while reducing reliance on expensive interceptor munitions. Current efforts focus on improving power generation, beam control, target tracking, and mobility for battlefield deployment. Directed energy systems are increasingly viewed as an important component of future layered air defense and counter-drone operations.
