India Takes Dialogue Role in GCAP After Pursuing FCAS Participation India has moved closer to international sixth-generation fighter development after joining the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as a “dialogue partner,” only days after beginning steps toward participation in the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS).New Delhi and London reportedly held detailed consultations before India was nominated for the GCAP role, according to The Tribune, which cited unnamed UK officials.GCAP is jointly led by the UK, Italy, and Japan and targets development of a next-generation fighter by 2035. The aircraft is intended to eventually replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in British and Italian service. FCAS, meanwhile, is expected to achieve full operational capability during the 2040s.India’s dialogue-partner status will enable it to interact with the three GCAP nations regarding the fighter’s development, technology, progress, and capabilities.Earlier in August, Canada became an observer in GCAP. This gives Ottawa greater access to discussions, including matters involving industrial cooperation and long-term delivery planning. Although Canada does not have decision-making authority, its participation could support future discussions over its potential contribution to the program.The aircraft is being developed by BAE Systems of Britain, Leonardo of Italy, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. through their joint venture, Edgewing. The venture recently received a £4.6-billion ($6.23-billion) UK government contract to advance development.India’s Sixth-Generation Fighter ChallengeIndia’s interest in sixth-generation programs comes while it is developing its own fifth-generation fighter, with induction anticipated in 2035.Several nations already operate fifth-generation aircraft. The F-22 Raptor, the first operational aircraft in this category, has been in service for around two decades.China has also rapidly advanced its combat-aircraft capabilities after decades of relying heavily on Russian designs and technology. The Royal United Services Institute estimates that China operates approximately 300 J-20 fifth-generation fighters, while the Pentagon has reported that Beijing has begun flight testing two sixth-generation fighter prototypes.Unlike fifth-generation aircraft, whose design priorities strongly emphasize stealth through optimized airframes, internal weapons bays, and radar-absorbent materials, sixth-generation systems are expected to represent a much broader combat-air architecture.Such systems are likely to combine advanced stealth and sensing with artificial intelligence, networked operations, electronic warfare, and cooperation with uncrewed combat aircraft.For India, involvement in a sixth-generation program could provide insight into advanced technologies and development methods. However, deeper participation would require major financial commitments and could compete with resources allocated to India’s indigenous fighter program.Leonardo chief executive Lorenzo Mariani reportedly said at the Farnborough Airshow last month that any new partner would have to enter the program by the end of 2026, leaving India limited time to assess the advantages and costs of deeper involvement.
